INTRODUCTION

The Harlem Renaissance Art Exhibit pays tribute to the art created between 1919-1948 in the Harlem subdivision of New York City. This new wing of the E&E Renaissance Collection is the first to showcase both visual and musical art together. The addition was just opened in December 2010 and is the first of its kind to appear in Provo, Utah.

Alain Leroy Locke, an influential writer from Harlem, stated "Each culture group has its own identity and it is entitled to protect and promote it." This statement was the sole motivation for the development of this Exhibit. Therefore, it reflects the culture of the African-Americans in a pivotal time for them. James Langston Huges wrote, "An artist must be free to choose what he does, certainly, but he must also never be afraid to do what he might choose." Let us view what these artists have boldly chosen to show the world.
